Sunset - Milky Way - Meteor Shower - Workshop
Mark your calendar for Friday October 9, 2015 in San Luis Obispo County, and scroll down to register! I will be hosting my first ever hybrid "sun and stars" class, featuring a hands-on look at the fundamentals of seascapes, sunsets, and photographing the Milky Way; all in one night. We will be treated to the peak of the Draconids Meteor Shower just after dusk, so this is truly a night you will not want to miss.
Intro to Seascapes/Sunsets - 5:30 PM to 7 PM
Sunset - 6:35 PM
Intro to Milk Way - 7 PM to 7:45 PM
Milky Way Visible - 7:45 PM
Meteor Shower - 8 PM to 10 PM
I can’t imagine a better way to end a work week!
Seascapes and Sunset
During the sunset and seascape portion of the class, we will go over best practices, gear, and camera settings for capturing various aspects of a seascape scene. We will talk about composition, use of techniques to capture motion blur in water, and use of rectangular filter systems for capturing dynamic landscape images without the use of HDR. We will discuss sunset photography with and without the use of filters, so please do not let filters intimidate you. I will have filters for demo purposes as well.
Please note: this is not an HDR class. Capturing your unique vision in a single frame is simply the most satisfying experience as a photographer. There are various practical applications for HDR, and it’s a great tool to have in your tool-belt however, this class does not cover that material.
The two filters below are used in many of my sunset seascape photographs:
3 Stop Solid Neutral Density Filter
3 Stop Reverse Graduated Filter (Singh-Ray makes the best)
Also recommended for general landscape:
3 Stop Graduated Neutral Density Filter
Circular Polarizing Filter
Through my affiliate program with Singh-Ray, you are able to receive a 10% discount on filters purchased with a special coupon code, as a student of my workshops. I will send you this information once you have booked your spot. Also, please feel free to contact me directly with any questions before purchasing filters. Click here or look below to see the reverse graduated filter in action.
If you have a set of filters, please bring those to the workshop. We can talk about how to use them for sunsets, and I will have my filters for demo purposes. After the workshop you will have enough information to make a more educated filter purchase if need be. I am happy to go over any questions you have about filters and filter system before the workshop and during our time together.
Milky Way and Meteors
This portion of the class will include an introduction to photographing the Milky Way. We will go over camera settings and best practices to start you on your journey to creating stunning night sky images. If you are a previous workshop attendee, this is the perfect opportunity to brush up on the fundamentals. For new students this will give you a taste and have you hooked on photographing the night sky.
Once you have these tools, you will want to take the next step in 2016, and attend one of the more extensive Astrophotography Workshops where we talk about Milky Way panoramas, light painting, locations and planning, capturing star trails, and much much more.
We will be treated to the peak of the annual Draconids Meteor Shower! We will photograph the night sky and enjoy the show as a group, and maybe even catch a meteor in frame.
This workshop does not include an editing/post-processing module.
A note about the weather: If the weather does not cooperate, we will still proceed with the course materials, and you will be equipped with the necessary tools to go back out on a clear night and photograph the night sky. I will have a backup location for the night sky portion of the class that we will caravan to if need be.

"I have taught several photography classes and clients. I was also a teacher for 31 years and believe I know the qualities of a fine educator. Brady Cabe is among the best I have seen and learned from. His attention to detail is only surpassed by his preparation and commitment to his students, who by the way, become friends very easily. If you are reading this then just take the class! An adventure awaits you, both in subject matter and most of all . . . in Brady"
"I had the pleasure of taking Brady's astrophotography workshop in June 2015. Brady is a knowledgeable and well prepared instructor. He is also very flexible and ready to listen to the people he is instructing. I have been a photographer for many years, and yet Brady was able to give me valuable information and insight, that was new, and helps me in my creative endeavors.
I would recommend Brady Cabe for any class he may teach, because I know he will do all that is necessary, and required, to create a great experience for those involved!."
